I have to say, I really like the concept that seasons last decades; it's very original. And I always love a strong-willed red-haired chick.
But seriously, "A Song of Ice and Fire"? It's like the author put into a title generator program, "What's the most sophomoric, generic, cliche, and dichotomous fantasy title imaginable?"
It then spat out, as fast as squealing fan girl can run down to the book store and buy every single title simultaneously without even reading the front jacket of the very first novel --
"Ice and Fire"
The author then said to himself, "You know, thats not quite cliche enough. I need some panache, some zazz, some... razzmatazz!
He then added to it, chuckling to himself lightly, knowing full-well he was about to be wealthy and famous,
"A Song of Ice and Fire"
Sorry for the digression, but that shit just gets to me.
Anyway, what's the gist of the story? I've honestly been looking for something to read lately, and I think I tapped everything remotely interesting in modern science-fiction (read: there is none). _________________ Sometimes the difference between victory and defeat can cost you your own sanity -- or your own life.

Chris I will cut you if you haven't read Robin Hobb's fantasy yet (mainly her first person narratives), she's my favorite author!
Also Lynn Flewelling's writing is pretty good too.
Uh but I got off topic too, I'll definately check this one out, I'm always looking for good quality fantasy writing. There's so much crap out there and I'm pretty picky. :X _________________

Don't be put off by the series name Christian! It really is a fantastic series, the last book was slightly a let down because half the characters, all them just happening to be my favorites, were left out of the book, but well worth reading. There are four books in the series so far, the first is "A Game of Thrones."
I love the author's writing style, he makes every character human and gives each of them flaws and strenghts, thus not creating the same type cast good vs evil. Every chapter is a different character's P.O.V. so you see how each character feels and what is motivating them to act out.'
An, yes, the land of good Sci Fic has recently run very dry; Terry Goodkind will be releasing the last book of his Sword of Truth series very soon though I think.
Anyway here is the link and synopsis to the first book, it's really much better than it sounds. There is a sample chapter on the link page I suggest you read.

A Game of Thrones
Long ago, in a time forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons out of balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes to the north of Winterfell, sinister and supernatural forces are massing beyond the kingdom’s protective Wall. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the land they were born to. Sweeping from a land of brutal cold to a distant summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, here is a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens.
Here an enigmatic band of warriors bear swords of no human metal; a tribe of fierce wildlings carry men off into madness; a cruel young dragon prince barters his sister to win back his throne; and a determined woman undertakes the most treacherous of journeys. Amid plots and counterplots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, the fate of the Starks, their allies, and their enemies hangs perilously in the balance, as each
endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones. _________________ "I have looked last upon that which is fairest,' he said to Legolas his companion. 'Henceforth I will call nothing fair, unless it be her gift." ~ Gimli |

Kind of a generic description.
As for Ellen's question, I've read very little fantasy. It's all pretty hokey and mostly the same.
Anyway, next time I'm at B&N I'll take a look; I have a gift card burning a hole in my pocket. _________________ Sometimes the difference between victory and defeat can cost you your own sanity -- or your own life.
